Beacon Bears Hockey Team Competes in 17th Annual New England Pond Hockey Classic

The 17th Annual New England Pond Hockey Classic took place January 30–February 1, 2026, on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Dennis O'Neill and friends, known as “The Beacon Bears,” once again participated in the three-day outdoor tournament. This marks the team’s 16th appearance at the annual event.

The New England Pond Hockey Classic is a celebration of hockey in its purest form—outdoors in the fresh air, surrounded by stunning winter scenery, and played in frigid New England temperatures. While the competition is spirited, the event is just as much about camaraderie, reconnecting with fellow hockey enthusiasts, and simply enjoying the game. It’s a weekend that blends friendly rivalry with lasting friendships.

Dennis and his teammates have been playing recreational hockey together for many years. Each winter, when not traveling around the country for construction consulting assignments, Dennis makes it a priority to hit the ice one or two nights a week for fun and exercise.

Since 2010, teams from across New England and beyond have gathered in New Hampshire for this beloved tournament. More than 275 teams lace up their skates each year, competing in over 500 games across 26 rinks during the three-day event. In addition to the on-ice action, the weekend features a variety of social activities that make the experience memorable both on and off the ice.
