Karen's Interests & Hobbies. Two of Karen's passions in life are traveling and sailing. Prior to joining Beacon, Karen and her husband Greg spent 6 years traveling up and down the east coast and to Bahamian out islands aboard their sailboat. Karen said that living and traveling on the boat was a great experience in many different ways. The couple met a lot of wonderful people from all different walks of life. Their destinations included towns and cities along the Atlantic seaboard, secluded anchorages along the Intracoastal Waterway, and off-the-beaten-track Bahamian out islands with pristine beaches and crystal-clear water

Living on the boat full time and traveling was a lifestyle very different from the couple's previous, extremely busy lives. The pace was slower, weather determined all travel, and they conserved on literally everything. Karen and Greg learned to live without many modern conveniences that most people take for granted. While living on the boat, one of her favorite activities and routines happened when they pulled into a new harbor. After securing their boat, they would drop their dinghy in the water and motor around the anchorage to meet other boaters. Sometimes it turned into dinner and cocktails with new friends and sometimes it ended up as just enjoying a great ride around a beautiful harbor and a breathtaking sunset. All in all, the journey was a dream come true. Karen said it reiterated to them how good most people are, the importance of always helping when you can, the importance of conserving, the benefit of always having a backup plan, and knowing that it doesn’t have to take a lot of effort to enjoy good people and natural beauty around you.

More recent travels include trips to various locations in Europe, and frequent trips to Florida. Karen's other hobbies inlcude fitness (her weekly routine includes yoga, strength training, walking and aerobic workouts) and reading. According to Karen, 'There’s nothing like reading a really great book! Whether it’s a historical fiction, horror, or suspense/thriller we learn, we laugh, and we gain perspective on people and situations that differ from our own.'

Karen’s favorite thing about working at Beacon – The people. Dennis is very approachable and definitely has an open-door policy regarding communications with his employees. He also has a knack for hiring people who are smart, hard working, and very easy to get along with. I can honestly say that I personally like everyone that works for Beacon. When we all get together for yearly corporate meeting and holiday dinner, it’s like a family reunion!
