Beacon Project Profile: Assembly Square MBTA Station, Somerville, MA

Beacon Consulting Group has extensive experience working on public facilities and transportation infrastructure projects, including many surety / construction consulting assignments. This project entailed construction consulting related to the Assembly Square MBTA Station, in Somerville, MA. MBTA stands for “Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority.” The agency is the public operator of most bus, subway, commuter rail, and ferry routes in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area. The MBTA system is one of the oldest and largest mass transit systems in the U.S.

Project Summary:

  • New MBTA Orange Line Train Station between Sullivan Square and Wellington Circle.
  • Provide direct connection to Assembly Row - mixed-use redevelopment with commercial, residential, and retail services.
  • Public / Private Partnership (State, MBTA, FTA and Federal Realty)
  • Contract Awarded 10/5/2011: $29,229,184 to S&R Construction.


Station Design Elements:

  • Multi-modal access: train, bus, car, bike, or walking
  • Compliant means of egress and accessible paths of travel.
  • Transparency for increased security, visibility and wayfinding.
  • Green roof on canopy, passive ventilation and daylighting.


Beacon’s Role/Service(s):

The original project began in the late 2011 / early 2012. The Surety for the General Contractor on the project was requested to assist with subcontractor / vendor disputes and accounts payable resolution. Beacon was retained by the Surety in 2014 to help assess the status of the project, to estimate the reserve required to cash flow the completion of the project, and assist the General Contractor in prosecuting outstanding claims and the completion of the contract work. Beacon provided a variety of surety / construction consulting services on the project, including:

  • Prepared the cost to complete summary
  • Resolved subcontractor liens, and disputes
  • Coordinate the completion of the Project with the Owner and Surety


The Station is currently open and operating. The entire project is scheduled for final completion late summer of 2015.

More information: The MBTA is one of the largest and oldest mass transit system in the U.S., serving more than 176 towns and cities in Massachusetts, with an average weekly ridership of more than 1.3 million passenger trips. MBTA's system includes 183 bus routes, 2 of which are Bus Rapid Transit lines, 3 rapid transit (subway) lines, 5 light rail routes, 4 trackless trolley lines and 13 commuter rail routes.
