Beacon Staff Profile: Mike Kinahan, Project Manager / Surety Consultant

Mike Kinahan joined Beacon's team in 2008, starting as a Project Engineer in Beacon's Medford, MA office. Over the past 12 years, Mike has developed into a highly seasoned construction consultant and a valuable member of Beacon's team. His experience has grown to include a wide range of construction project consulting engagements within the transportation, residential, commercial, education, recreation, government, municipal, and infrastructure sectors. Mike has extensive experience helping Surety companies with bond-default-related matters, including project assessments, bond claim analysis, project re-lets, and construction completion management.

Mike is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he received a Bachelor of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering. He currently holds a Construction Supervisors License for Massachusetts. Mike’s attention to detail on construction accounting issues, combined with his ability to work effectively with onsite construction personnel, has contributed to his success in turning around numerous troubled projects for Beacon's Surety clients.

Two example projects where Mike played a lead role in recent years are noted below:

  • Assembly Square MBTA Station (Somerville, MA): Beacon was retained by a leading Surety to help assess the status of a commuter train station construction project, to estimate the reserve required to cash flow the completion of the project, and assist the General Contractor in prosecuting outstanding claims and the completion of the contract work. Under this engagement, Beacon provided a variety of surety / construction consulting services on the project, including: (1) Preparing the cost to complete summary; (2) Resolving subcontractor liens, and disputes, and (3) Coordinating the completion of the Project with the Owner and Surety.
  • Nahant Beach Reservation Reconstruction (Nahant, MA): Nahant Beach Reservation is a popular Massachusetts State Park, including a beach and recreation area, located northeast of Boston. Following the default of the General Contractor working on a reconstruction project at the park, Beacon was retained by a leading Surety to help get the project back on track. Beacon work included (1) Performing a detailed assessment of the project, including a cost to complete, (2) Assisting the Surety in finding a suitable completion contractor, and (3) Ratifying the existing sub-contractors on the project. The work involved in the project included reconstruction of all of the following: A causeway, related road infrastructure, parking lot, retaining walls, new curbing and guardrails, boardwalks, boat ramp, and landscaping work.

In his free time, Mike enjoys playing basketball, volleyball, flag football, softball and traveling with his wife Ali. In recent years, Mike organized Beacon's coed after-work softball team, the Beacon Bears. Mike led the team to some winning seasons (including a league championship), as well as some fun post-game celebrations at M.J. O'Connors in Boston. When asked what he enjoys about his career, Mike said he likes the comradery, the diversity of the projects which Beacon takes on and the challenge of helping clients to get troubled construction projects back on track—a process which requires a unique combination of on-site project management expertise and the ability to find creative solutions to technical, contractual and personnel issues which arise.
