I hope your Spring is going well. This time of year is extremely busy in the construction industry. In the northern parts of the U.S., work on exterior construction, roadways, and other civil projects accelerates along with the longer days and warmer temperatures. Beacon's team is currently working on a wide range of construction projects across the U.S. On the east coast, we are consulting on projects from New England to Florida, including several large skyscrapers being built in New York City and an important civil / site work project underway at a U.S. Military Base in Jacksonville, FL (see Beacon's May E-news). In Texas, we are consulting on an apartment complex in San Antonio and a concrete project underway in Dallas. Beacon was recently retained by a leading Surety company to provide construction consulting and construction management services related to an ongoing construction project at a United States Marines facility located on Blount Island (in Jacksonville, FL). Beacon has a long track record of working on military bases across the U.S., as well as at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. The Blount Island Marine Corps Support Facility is one of the United States' newer military installations, but plays a crucial role in global security. Guido Morfesi joined Beacon's Construction Consulting team in the fall of 2022. Since that time, Guido has been providing project management and construction consulting services for Beacon's clients at multiple projects around the country. Although he is based in Florida, Guido also played a lead role on an important Beacon project located in Ohio through 2023. We caught up with Guido this week to learn more about his background.

Jim Lynch recently joined Beacon's team as a Project Engineer Trainee. Jim comes to us from Ireland and will be working for Beacon for at least the next year under the U.S. government's J-1 Visa Exchange program. Beacon has long been an employer partner for the J-1 program, which gives young engineers (and other recent grads from outside the U.S.) the opportunity to gain experience working for a U.S. company. The J-1 program also has many other categories (beside graduate trainees), such as camp counselors, au pairs, students, seasonal workers, physicians, teachers, professors, etc...

This message marks the rare calendar date which comes every 4 years (leap year) - February 29th. I had to use Google to remember why we have leap year, but it's because the earth actually takes 365 days and 6 hours to orbit the sun (not exactly 365 days). That extra quarter of a day has to get accounted for somewhere. So every four years, we add 24 hours (four times six hours) to the calendar at the end of February. It's pretty impressive that ancient civilizations as far back as the Roman Empire (45 BC) had figured out the need for that extra day every 4 years!
